# Free Model: full public reference

> Free Model is an independent OpenRouter free-route information directory with an optional bounded Chat workspace. It never asks for or holds visitor OpenRouter API keys.

## Interpretation rules

- A route is the unit of access. A model and openrouter/free are different identities.
- Listed free means the official catalog was observed. It does not mean a real inference succeeded.
- Verified available requires a recent scoped inference, exact-route evidence, zero user charge, and a matching account cohort.
- Text verification does not verify vision, tools, or another capability.
- Runtime evidence expires after 24 hours. Public catalog observations are shown as listed-free, not verified.
- Checker or account failures delay verification and do not prove that a route is unavailable.
- Chat availability is a separate fail-closed decision. A route must satisfy current directory evidence, dedicated-key permissions, and the server allowlist before it is selectable.

## Data boundaries

- Public records exclude API keys, authorization headers, full generated output, nonces, and private error payloads.
- External API calls shown in directory examples go directly to OpenRouter under the visitor account.
- Optional Chat requests instead transit Free Model, OpenRouter, and the selected model provider using a dedicated server-side service key. That key is never sent to the browser.
- Free Model does not intentionally persist or log Chat prompts and responses. Conversation history is stored only in browser local storage; the shared database stores pseudonymous quota-window hashes and counters.
- Chat is disabled and hidden unless its key cap, free-only permissions, approved model intersection, and quota infrastructure pass current readiness checks.
- OpenRouter remains authoritative for its current API, pricing, eligibility, and terms.
